What is a wall dog door?
A dog door or dog flap is a small opening to allow dogs to enter and exit a building on their own without needing a human to open the door. Originally simple holes, the modern form is a hinged and often spring-loaded panel or flexible flap, and some are electronically controlled. Why go through the door when you can go through the wall? Wall installations are very popular because they allow a flexibility of location and ultimate control over where your dog enters the house. If you don’t have wood screen door with dog door built in then you can install dog wall entry yourself. The two biggest things to consider when looking into wall mounts are the size of your dog and the thickness of your walls.
Most dog openings through walls will go up to 8”, but only a few have options beyond that. Your dog size is also important to consider, as these through wall dog gates will essentially be tunnels. You want to make sure the door is big enough for the comfort of your pet.
Electronic dog doors
If you’re a dog owner with a beautiful backyard or patio, an electronic dog door can provide your dog with a secure way to access the outside without you having to get up to let them out. Electronic doors can be permanently or temporarily installed, so if you live in a rental you can still use an electronic dog door. There are even electronic doors for toy breeds and large dogs.
We reviewed dozens of automatic dog doors to identify the best options available. We looked at sliding glass dog doors and electronic doors with microchips. We even evaluated models designed to provide cost-effective solutions for small dogs.
Smart dog doors with RFID
A smart dog door can mean a few things, but generally, it uses technology to allow your dog in or out of the house. Most smart dog doors use Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) to detect your pet, subsequently unlocking and/or opening the door. The signal will either come from your pet’s embedded microchip or a compatible RFID Collar.
While functions vary, most involve automatic locking/opening features, timers, and security functions such as only letting your specific pets in or out. Smart doggy doors are usually powered by a battery or plug directly into the wall. Smart doors sense your pet’s presence by either an RFID tag or its microchip, unlocking when pushed open by your dog or automatically opening as your dog draws near the sensor.
